How long do criminal cases last?

Due to the slowness of processes in our judicial system, various practices are being implemented to seek different solutions. The target time application in the judiciary is one of these practices. The "Regulation on the Determination and Application of Target Timeframes for Investigation, Prosecution or Trial," which regulates the procedures and principles regarding the determination and application of target timeframes in trial proceedings, was published in the Official Gazette No. 3015 dated June 23, 2017, and entered into force on September 1, 2017. Within the scope of this regulation, the criteria and procedures to be considered in determining the timeframes are regulated. In studies conducted within the Ministry of Justice, this applies to all criminal cases. Average target timeframes: 10-13 months It has been determined.

In practice, the average trial duration for Magistrates' Criminal Courts is 289 days, while for High Criminal Courts it is 260 days. If the pre-trial investigation period is also included, the entire process can be expected to take between 2 and 3 years.
