Except for foreign nationals exempt from residence permits, foreign nationals are required to obtain a residence permit for stays in Türkiye outside of their visa validity period. The extension of residence permits is a provision of international law. This provision is also important for national interests, as it helps protect public health and order, prevent potential negative situations, and allows for the identification and control of foreign residents.

The types of residence permits in Türkiye, based on the requirements for being in the country, are: short-term, long-term, family, student, victim of human trafficking, and humanitarian residence permit. Once the appropriate type is determined for the foreign national, a residence permit application can be submitted.

Application Procedure for Extending a Residence Permit

The extension of a residence permit is achieved by individuals residing in Turkey for various reasons applying to the Turkish Directorate of Migration Management by preparing certain documents requested by the Directorate. First, the applicant must access the e-residence system and submit an online application. Then, the required documents must be prepared. The application must be submitted by mail to the Directorate of Migration Management in the province of residence. A period of 5 business days is allowed for this. Residence permit extension procedures are carried out according to these rules. In other words, the person requesting the extension of their residence permit must first fill out the application form by clicking on the "I want to extend my residence permit" option on the online application system, either themselves or through a representative, and enter all the required information into the online system. Subsequently, the application form and all documents must be sent by mail to the Directorate of Migration Management in the province of residence.

Please ensure you are applying through the official website. The legally mandated processing time for residence permit applications is 90 days. You will be notified if this period is extended. You can apply for an extension up to 60 days before your current residence permit expires. In any case, you must apply for an extension before your current residence permit expires.

For short-term residence permits, the required documents may vary depending on the type of residence permit. The main documents commonly required for all residence permit types are listed below. In addition to the documents listed below, the number of required documents may increase depending on the type of residence permit.

Required Common Documents

  1. Residence Permit Application Form (Must be signed by the foreign national and/or their legal representative.)
  2. Photocopy of passport or equivalent document (including the page with identification information and photograph, as well as the processed pages showing entry, exit, and visa information).
  3. Four (4) biometric photographs (Taken within the last 6 months, with a white background and biometric.)
  4. A statement confirming that sufficient and regular financial resources are available for the duration of the stay.
  5. Documents/receipts showing payment of residence permit fee and card fee.
  6. Valid health insurance
  7. A document proving registration in the Address Registration System.
  8. Document showing the place to stay.

It is strongly recommended to work with an expert lawyer to avoid making mistakes during the application process or regarding required documents. Otherwise, if the process results in your application being rejected and your visa expiring, the likelihood of deportation is quite high. What should be done if the application is rejected?

The rejection of a residence permit application, the failure to extend the permit, or its cancellation is notified to the foreigner, their legal representative, or their lawyer. The notification also includes information on how the foreigner can effectively exercise their right to appeal the decision and their other legal rights and obligations during this process. Furthermore, if a residence permit application is rejected, it is not possible to reapply for the same purpose of stay within 6 months.
